Ten Commandments Examination
I am the Lord your God. You shall not have strange gods before me.
- Do I love God with all my heart, mind, soul and strength?
- Do I place anything, people, materials, or even myself, above God in my life?
- Do I give God time every day in prayer?
- Have I ever been involved with superstitious practices or the occult?
- Have I ever deliberately told a lie or withheld something in confession?
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
- Do I ever use the name of God, or other holy person, as a curse or exclamation?
- Have I used God's name in vain: lightly or carelessly?
- Have I insulted a sacred person or abused a sacred object?
- Do I honor God and his name, and ask others around me to do the same?
Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day.
- Have I deliberately missed Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation?
- Have I ever received Communion in a state of mortal sin?
- Have I tried to observe Sunday as a family day and a day of rest?
Honor your Father and your Mother.
- Do I honor and obey my parents?
- Is my opinion of them honoring to the Lord?
- Do I speak harshly of them when they are not around?
- Have I given my family good example?
- Do I try to bring peace into my home life?
You shall not kill.
- Have I had an abortion or encouraged anyone to have an abortion?
- Have I abused alcohol or drugs?
- Have I lead others into sin?
- Have I been angry, resentful, violent, hateful, or vengeful to God or anyone else?
- Do I hate or have I ever harmed my body?
- Have I ever thought about or attempted suicide?
You shall not commit adultery.
- Have I engaged in any sexual activity outside of marriage?
- Have I used any method of artificial birth control?
- Have I masturbated or viewed pornography?
- Have I sought to control my thoughts?
- Have I respected all members of the opposite sex, or have I thought of other people as objects?
- Do I seek to be pure in my thoughts, words and actions?
- Am I careful to dress modestly?
You shall not steal.
- Have I stolen what is not mine?
- Have I cheated on tests or homework?
- Do I waste time at work, school or at home?
- Do I live above my needs, or do I seek to share what I have with the poor?
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
- Have I lied or gossiped or done nothing when someone else did?
- Have I spoken behind someone else's back?
- Do I ever tell just part of the truth, or withhold important information from others?
- Am I critical or negative in my thoughts of others?
- Have I betrayed someone or revealed a secret that should have been kept?
You shall not desire your neighbor's wife.
- Have I consented to impure thoughts?
- Have I caused them by impure reading, television, movies, or conversations?
- Do I seek to control my imagination?
- Have I been lustful in my thoughts or behaviors towards others?
You shall not desire your neighbor's goods.
- Am I jealous of what other people have or envy their possessions?
- Am I greedy or selfish?
- Do I constantly compare myself to others?
- Are material possessions overly important in my life?
- Do I trust that God will care for all of my material and spiritual needs?
